Jesus in the carpentery workshop

Repair of a small stained glass window, a fragment of a larger window, probably from the mid-19th century. The stained glass shows a scene with young Jesus in the carpentry workshop of St. Joseph. As can be seen in the photos, the outline of the preserved fragment was very irregular. We decided to "enclose" the original piece it with neutral glasses, obtaining rectangular shape. The stained glass window had some damage - cracked glass, gaps and, most importantly, numerous holes resulting from deformation. Our ambition was to keep as much of the original material as possible. The original lead, (although distorted and loose), was overall in good condition. The repair involved an action that would make the glasses fit tightly together again, without disassembling the stained glass window. The broken glasses were glued with conservation resin. And where important fragments were missing, new glass painted by us, based on the original, was inserted.

The main steps of the repair: gluing cracked glasses with resin, closing the gaps between the glasses caused by loosening and deformation of the lead, filling the more important gaps with new hand-painted glasses, similar to neighboring ones.
